Advocacy Committee

Advocacy Committee:  Monitors, researches and identifies areas for public policy advocacy on behalf of professional counselors working in the specialty areas of traumatic stress and resilience; gathers and shares information with the IARTC Board that confirms and highlights the need for state or national government action through legislation; communicates with state and national legislators in support of the needs of professional counselors working in the specialty area of traumatic stress; and performs relevant duties as from time to time may be prescribed by the IARTC President, on recommendation by the IARTC Board with your team.

Charles E. Myers, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, NCSC, RPT-S, DMH---Chair

Dr. Charles Myers is an Associate Professor of Counseling at Missouri State University. He is a licensed professional mental health counselor-supervisor in multiple states, Certified Child and Adolescent Trauma Professional, National Certified Counselor, National Certified School Counselor, and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. He is also a certified with American Red Cross to provide disaster mental health services. Dr. Myers has been a professional counselor for 20 years, serving as a rural and intercity school counselor, clinical mental health counselor, crisis counselor, and private practitioner. In addition, he has provided clinical and disaster mental health services in homeless shelters and in shelters and field hospitals following natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake.

He specializes in working with children and with survivors of trauma and in the use of play therapy and other expressive and experiential interventions in counseling and counselor education and supervision, sharing his expertise through national and international presentations and publications. He is co-editor of Therapists Creating a Cultural Tapestry: Using the Creative Therapies across Cultures and The Use of the Creative Therapies in Treating Depression, and gave the Keynote speech, The Universal Language of Expressive Arts: Giving Voice to Diverse Populations for the European Branch of the American Counseling Association, Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Myers is very involved with a number of a national and international professional organizational and has held numerous leadership positions.

Dr. Lindsey M. Brown McCormick is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology - Online Campus. She is a licensed professional counselor in multiple states, a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. She is also a Certified Therapist and Consultant-in-Training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy with the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). She is an Individual Affiliate with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and serves as an Affiliate Advisor for individual and organizational affiliates across the United States.

A native of the Appalachian coalfields, Dr. McCormick has been practicing in the field of trauma within rural Appalachia (KY, WV, OH) for over 10 years. Her clinical focus includes sexual trauma in children and adults, generational trauma, clinical sexuality, the LGBTQ+ population, and women's mental health. She currently practices at Rivers & Roads Psychotherapy, LLC in St Clairsville, OH and provides teletherapy to residents of OH, WV, KY, PA, and TN. 

Jiyoung Moon, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, RPT--Vice Chair

Dr. Jiyoung Moon completed her doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision in the CACREP-accredited counseling program from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Moon is currently a visiting assistant professor and practicum/internship coordinator at St. Mary’s University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas, a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). Additionally, she has completed advanced training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Dr. Moon has worked in various community mental health settings focusing on trauma for all ages in South Korea and in the United States. Her clinical focus includes physical and sexual trauma in children and adults, developmental trauma, and generational trauma. Dr. Moon’s primary interests in counselor education are play therapy, trauma/crisis counseling, and multicultural/diversity issues.

Amber Collins, BS, TCADC

I have worked in the substance use field for over 8 years.  I will obtain my Masters of Edu. In Counseling and Human Development from Lindsey Wilson College in December.  My passion is helping individuals suffering from substance use disorder, trauma, and related (often co-occurring) issues.  I have devoted my career to advocating for the removal of treatment barriers, dispelling stigmas, and providing high quality, evidence-based interventions such as Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a Reality Therapy clinical orientation.  My ultimate goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment that allows clients to be their authentic selves, able to experience hope, healing, and recovery.

Dr. Zoya McCants, EdD, LMHC (NY), LPC (NJ & PA), ACS

Dr. McCants is a doctorate level licensed mental health counselor with concentrations in leadership, trauma, counselor education & clinical supervision, and social justice policy development. Dr. McCants is a certified trauma informed specialist and trainer, and utilizes therapeutic modalities such as MBCT, CBT, Narrative Therapy, restorative breathwork, and trauma conscious yoga approaches. She is licensed in NY, NJ, and PA. She is an advocate for under-served populations, LGBTQIA population, and women’s rights. Dr. McCants is an Assistant Professor and the Program Director of Mental Health Counseling Program at Long Island University -Brooklyn campus. She also teaches as an adjunct professor at Touro College. 

Dr. McCants operates a group practice, Right to Heal, LLC in Northern NJ. In her practice she applies her skill set to work with individuals and couples, blending mental health care with breathwork, use of the physical body, and healthy living habits. Dr. McCants empowers her clients to increase motivation, resilience, and healing from trauma. In addition, Dr. McCants provides consultation services to non-profit organizations that are seeking to integrate wellness and behavioral health practices into their work, as well assist in creating program evaluations and SMART goals for reviewers. 

Dr. McCants has been a keynote speaker, trainer and consultant for organizations and events in NY, NJ, and PA. She has developed wellness and trauma informed programs and provides CE trainings for other mental health clinicians. Dr. McCants currently serves as the President for The American Counseling Association- NY Chapter. 

Michelle Dunn, MA, LPC

Michelle Dunn graduated from Monmouth University, receiving her Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling. She is a licensed LPC in Colorado, working full-time for an agency, and has a part-time private practice. She is currently a doctoral student at Capella University. She is certified in Accelerated Resolution Therapy and Brainspotting. She has trained in TF-CBT, EMDR, and CPT. Michelle has clinical experience working with children, teens, and adults in various settings, including outpatient and in-home. Michelle’s clinical interests include adults and teens with anxiety, trauma, and traumatic grief.

Maria Rawson, MA Candidate

Maria Rawson is an ambitious and ardent Foster Care and Adoption Specialist with four years of experience providing excellent services to a diverse range of clients in the state of Arizona. She is currently working with Arizona's Children Association where she is dedicated to improving the lives of children. She is passionate about connecting with the people she serves and creating a safe environment to process, work, and manage trauma. Her goal is to encourage growth and resilience in those who have survived traumatic experiences, bring families together, and heal generational traumas. Maria is involved in many advocacy such as volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and a Co-Founder of the Chicago School’s Anti-Human Trafficking Interest Group.
A holder of a B.S. in Alternative Medicine and Graduate Certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychology, and Certificate of Traumatic Stress Studies from the Trauma Research Foundation. Her areas of specialization include the neurobiology of sexual trauma and Child and Adolescent psychology. She is actively involved in the lives of people with a history of trauma to help them build coping skills for anxiety, depression, and trauma. For Maria, hearing that her counseling sessions have improved the lives of her clients is the greatest reward. Her interests include reading crime novels, collecting children’s books, and traveling. Maria will be graduating with a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling October of 2022.

Christine Banks-VanAllen, MA, LPCC-S

Christine is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor-Supervisor, EMDR-certified therapist, adjunct faculty member, and doctoral student with research interests in trauma, social justice, adolescents, and diagnosis. She has worked extensively in community mental health and specializes in counseling adolescents who have experienced complex trauma. Christine has held a range of state and national leadership positions, currently serving as Co-Chair of the Advocacy and Social Justice Committee with the Ohio Association for Resilience and Trauma Counseling (OARTC). She recently served as IARTC's Doctoral Student Representative (2022-2023) and Graduate Student Committee Chair (2021-2022). Additionally, Christine has presented on topics related to trauma, diagnosis, and social justice at state and national counseling conferences. Christine is looking forward to serving with IARTC on the Advocacy Committee this year!

Kristen Page, PhD, LMHC, NCC

Dr. Page is an Associate professor in the Department of Counseling at the University of the Cumberlands. She is a licensed mental health counselor (FL), nationally certified counselor, and a certified crisis provider.  She is a mental health crisis consultant for regional and national events establishing care and programs for various entities including corporations, schools, state and local governments.  She has provided mental health counseling for over 10 years with specialties including addictions, severe mental health, adolescents, crisis/trauma, family law mediation, and anxiety. Areas of previous, current research and publication include adolescents, disaster mental health, theories in supervision, crisis work, substance abuse, and high-risk recidivists. Dr. Page has presented at local, state, regional and national conferences, and has publications on a variety of related topics including teaching in counselor education, high-risk recidivists, trauma and the military, addictions, and best practices in counseling response to large scale crises. She has previously served on the board for the Florida Counseling Association and has advocated for counselors at the state and national levels.

Jemima Lormeus, BA

Greetings ! My name is Jemima Lormeus and I am a first-generation Haitian American graduate student. I began my studies at Florida Atlantic University and graduated in 2019 with a bachelor's in psychology with a minor in criminal justice. I am currently a graduate student in Mental Health Counseling at Lynn University. My passion for counseling started in my undergraduate studies. Realizing the need for mental health counselors in my community raised my awareness and increased my passion to further my education.  My long-term goals are to gain my licensure and to be able to provide services to the Haitian community and educate them on the mental health field. Being in the Advocacy Committee for the International Association for Resilience and Trauma Counseling allows me to learn about the many cultures we may face and proceed to advocate, emphasize, and understand. Aside from my career, as a hobby I love to watch rap battles, food blog, and travel! I look forward to serving and working this year!

Kelly Lansden,  MA, ALC, NCC

Kelly Lansden is an Associate Licensed Counselor in the state of Alabama and Nationally Certified Counselor under the supervision of Chuck Duer, LPC-S. She completed a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Birmingham-Southern College. Kelly currently works at SafeHouse of Shelby County treating survivors of intimate partner violence and completed an internship at Crisis Center, Inc. in Birmingham, Alabama where she treated survivors of sexual assault. Kelly has special interests in working with trauma, LGBTQIA+, chronic illness and disability. She utilizes a trauma-informed, integrative and holistic approach to counseling, incorporating CBT, DBT, systemic, and narrative strategies to best benefit her clients.
